Fellow creatures of the night, I write this missive from a place of suffering and sorrow. Though it has been decades since the birth of our beloved goth subculture, gothic lifestyle continues to face persecution and misunderstanding from the narrow-minded citizens of the daylight world. They label us troubled, violent, depressed – when in truth, what we love most is creativity, individuality and finding community among those who see beauty in the shadows.
Gothic Lifestyle Persecuted
My persecution began as a lonely teen, dressing in black and painting my lips a dark crimson red. Teachers frowned, peers mocked and accused me of attention seeking. My parents, in their fear and ignorance, tried to hide my strange obsession – threatening to take away what privileges I had if I did not conform. Little did they realize, black had become the color of my soul.
The cruel taunts only intensified when I pierced my lip, my eyebrow and accessorized with chains that jangled with every step. I was labeled a freak, an outcast unworthy of respect or compassion. My teachers implied I would never amount to anything. Yet their harsh words only fed the defiance growing within my gothic heart.
Years passed and though my style evolved, society’s disdain for the gothic lifestyle did not. Job interviews were blighted by suspicions over my “alternative” appearance. Dates ended early when men grew uncomfortable with a woman unashamed to stand out. Even doctors and therapists assumed my dark interests indicated an underlying mental disorder that required fixing. But what they refused to recognize was that the gothic aesthetic nurtures my creativity, satisfies my soul and connects me to others who embrace darkness as I do.
Judgement of gothic aesthetics
Goth fashion goes against everything “normal” and “appropriate” according to common notions of style and decorum. Black is deemed a ‘negative’ or ‘somber’ color unfit for optimism. Heavy metal spikes and studs are seen as aggressive and unsafe. Pale foundation and dark eye makeup is branded as unprofessional. But goth style emerges from a desire for self-expression beyond the boundaries of everyday aesthetics.
The fear of darkness
Our culture has been programmed to fear darkness, seeing it as dangerous, sinful and worthy of shame. Yet darkness has always played an essential role in history, art, spirituality and the human experience. The gothic lifestyle and aesthetic embraces darkness not out of morbidity or violence but as a source of mystery, introspection and creative rebirth. But a world steeped in the worship of light fails to see darkness’ virtue.
Finding community in the shadows
Many of us gravitated to goth culture as lonely outsiders seeking a place to belong. The clubs, concerts and online forums became a refuge where we could freely express our passions for the macabre, supernatural and unusual. Among others who also loved the darkness, we found acceptance, fellowship and a new sense of joy and confidence in our own uniqueness bolstered by the gothic lifestyle. Community is a light that can shine from the shadows.
A scream against conformity
Goth will always be a scream against a world that demands uniformity. We refuse to blend in, to go unnoticed, to sacrifice our individuality on the altar of social acceptance. Our style makes a statement: that creativity finds a way and individuality is a virtue, not a vice. Though some seek to stifle our self-expression, goths will always find a way to amplify our peculiar passions and be proudly, unapologetically different living the gothic lifestyle.
Darkness is my inspiration
I will always love the gothic aesthetic that has shaped so much of who I am. Its dark lyrics, paranormal fantasies and outsider spirit continue to fire my creativity and push me to explore life from fascinating new perspectives. Though society may never embrace what I love, I take solace in knowing others walk this twisted path beside me. And together, we shall transform darkness into light.
What to do about the persecution?
Wear your style proudly. Do not let the judgement of others hold you back from expressing yourself authentically. Be confident in who you are and what you love, no matter what people think.
Educate others kindly. The gothic lifestyle is unfamiliar to most. When confronted with ignorance or prejudice, respond with patience and reason. Explain that goth culture is about self-expression, not violence. Share your passions to foster a dialogue and greater understanding.
Build community. Surround yourself with other goths who embrace you for who you are. Their acceptance will empower you to be yourself confidently, even in a critical world. Find strength in numbers.
Avoid internalizing criticism. Remember that society’s judgements say more about Their fears and limitations than about you. Do not take criticisms to heart or let them alter who you fundamentally are.
Focus on meaning, not appearance. Your identity as a goth is about far more than how you dress or look. Find deeper meaning in the culture’s values, creativity and community. This inner sense of purpose will sustain you.
Turn criticism into fuel. When faced with prejudice, let it fuel your defiance. Let it motivate you to express yourself even more boldly and unapologetically. Use it as inspiration to push artistic boundaries.
Walk your own path. At the end of the day, you have to live your truth and walk the road to a gothic lifestyle that feels right to you. Let no one dictate how you should think, feel or express yourself. Stay true to your heart above all else.
Conclusion
My fellow dwellers of the netherworld, we must rise up and reclaim our right to love what we love unapologetically. Let us drown out the prejudiced voices with a chorus of dark poetry and haunting tunes. Let our self-expression show the world that creativity knows no bounds, and individuality is a virtue, not a vice. WEAR YOUR GOTHIC ATTIRE PROUDLY! Though society may never fully accept our peculiar passions, we must walk proudly in moonlit graveyards and dimly lit clubs, persevering in the face of persecution. For it is through our defiance that darkness will transform this world, one gothic heart at a time.
So my beloved brethren, be not afraid. Stand taller in your pointed boots, paint on a bolder lip and raise your pale hands high. Let your chains rattle, your jewelry glitter and your black flag fly – for you were born to be different, to find beauty in the strange and revel in darkness without shame. Live freely and unapologetically goth, no matter who seeks to diminish your light.
